Spirit

When you pray, bring together the whole world in the depth of your love.
AELRED, 12TH CENTURY CISTERCIAN

Because God is Word, men become silence. True silence is not empty, but filled, it is listening to Someone, attentiveness to God and to His Word. This prayer, entirely personal, takes place in the greatest freedom, sometimes in the monk's private room or in the community study room ; sometimes in chuch ; or yet again, while walking in the cloister or outside in nature.

Each according to his own rhythm takes time to pore lovingly over the words of God in the Bible, or simply to remain in the presence of the One by whom he is loved, or again to bring before the Lord the sorrows and hopes of our world.
